Configuring Your CPU to Watch a Streamed on-demand video or Webcast
To watch a live or archived streamed video, you will need any recent Macintosh or Windows CPU which is connected to the Internet with a fast connection. Any business or school ethernet connection, cable modem, or DSL connection should work. You will also need the latest version of QuickTime installed.


Testing Your CPU Configuration to determine if it is setup correctly to play streamed video.

To test if your CPU is appropriately configured for QuickTime streaming, select and play one of the streamed videos at Apple Special Event. Remember that you need a fast internet connection to view most of the streamed videos.

When you play the video, it may open in a QuickTime Player window or in a browser window. Most of the online seminar videos open in a QuickTime Player window. If you can see the video and hear the audio then you should be able to watch both live and archived QuickTime streaming events.

If you are unsuccessful in viewing the video and/or hearing the audio, please follow the steps below.

Problems?
If you did not succeed in viewing the test video here are the sequence of steps you should follow to configure your CPU. Visit the QuickTime Download page to download and install the latest version of QuickTime. You will be ask to enter your email and specify your operating system.

If you still can not see the test video, your local firewall must be blocking streaming video. The steps below for Macintosh and Windows should correct the problem.

Macintosh Transport Assignment
  • Launch the QuickTime Player application.
  • From the QuickTime Player menu, locate Preferences and select QuickTime Preferences.
  • In the resulting dialogue, click the Advanced option.
  • Now select Custom... from the Transport Setup pop-up menu.
  • Use the pop-up menu to select HTTP. Be sure that the radio button for Port ID: is set to 80.
  • Click OK and close the QuickTime preferences dialogue.
  • Now return to the test video above.

Windows Transport Assignment
  • Launch QuickTime Player.
  • From the Edit menu, select QuickTime Preferences.
  • In the resulting dialogue choose Streaming Transport from the pop up bar at the top.
  • Now Check Use HTTP Port 80.
  • Close the preferences and return to the test video above.

Connection SpeedConnection Speed
In order to get the best possible performance, it is important to set up your computer to match your internet connection. This is usually done when you install QuickTime. During installation you are asked for your internet connection speed, for example 56K modem, DSL, or corporate LAN. If you did not specify your connection speed when you installed QuickTime, or if your Internet connection has changed since then, you should set the connection speed in the QuickTime control panel (Mac OS 9 and Windows) or in the QuickTime pane of System Preferences - Streaming tab (Mac OS X).
